Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary community initiative, supported by police, where groups of neighbours get together to deal with local problems, help to prevent and detect crime and endeavour to create safe and caring communities, with special regard to vulnerable people. Each group or 'scheme' has a coordinator - a volunteer serving as a contact person to receive and pass on information. With modern Internet technology much of this is achieved by email, but it is important that arrangements are made to include those without that facility. Local police will advise on the formation of new schemes and established coordinators can often help. A note of history:- The principle of Neighbourhood Watch began in Oakland, California, and was first established in this country in 1982 in the Cheshire village of Mollington. Its success in dealing with local crime was quickly recognised and the establishment of Watch Schemes spread rapidly during the 1980s. Varying estimations have been made of the total number of Watch Schemes. However, in a Parliamentary debate (Hansard 27 May 2004) reference was made to there being about 155,000 such schemes. Local estimations are that more than 8,000 of these are established in Sussex.
